Black Panther is a currently in production with one of the greatest casts ever announced for a superhero film. Tonight we learned that one of those cast members is playing a key role that went unannounced, even in the press release that marked the beginning of production. Letitia Wright is playing Shuri, sister of T’Challa/Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), and a character who eventually wears the mantle of Black Panther in Marvel Comics.
The news comes from Disney’s presentation at CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie exhibitors in Las Vegas, NV. Eric Vespe of Ain’t It Cool News snapped and tweeted the photo above that shows the cast with Shuri mentioned for the first time. This is big news for fans of Black Panther lore that could point to a future for the franchise beyond Boseman’s T’Challa.
Shuri isn’t just a supporting character in the comics. She actually takes hold of the Black Panther mantle that is passed down from warrior to warrior. It is far too early to tell if Shuri will have the same future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Boseman will probably be front and center for at least one or two more Black Panther solo films.
If, however, the character is properly developed, then the option for Shuri to lead this franchise could eventually be on the table.
