Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the cover story of this month’s issue of Empire. That means we are set to see new images and learn new details from the film. Some of those new images are available already, including a great look at Ego the Living Planet, played by Kurt Russell.
Writer/director James Gunn told Empire that he had Russell in mind for Ego from the very start.
“I started writing for Kurt as I was finishing the screenplay. I would have been really disappointed if he’d said no.”
Russell told Empire that he had to watch the first movie before deciding to take what is literally the biggest role he’s ever played.
“Fifteen minutes in, I said, ‘I think I see why they’re coming to me.’ The baggage I bring from some of the movies I’ve done is the right kind of baggage to bring into this one.
“I’ve never played anybody bigger! I’ve never played a character with broader possibilities, I’ll say that.”
Ego isn’t just a big role for Russell, as the character was also a massive visual effects challenge for Gunn, as the director explained.
“We have over a trillion polygons on Ego’s planet. It’s the biggest visual effect of all time. There’s nothing even close to it. Which is cool.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters May 5.
