Marvel Television has found the actors who will play the title roles in Cloak & Dagger. The original series, set to air on Disney’s Freeform network, will star Olivia Holt as Tandy Bowen, a.k.a. Dagger, and Aubrey Joseph as Tyrone Johnson, a.k.a. Cloak.

Holt is best known for her role as Kim Crawford on the Disney series, Kickin’ It. She also has some Marvel credentials. She voiced Petra Parker/Spider-Girl on Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man animated series.

Joseph recently appeared in the HBO limited series, The Night Of. He also had a role in Run All Night.

Along with the casting announcement, Marvel has released a synopsis for the series.

“Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” is a coming-of-age series based on the beloved Marvel characters.  Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson come from starkly different backgrounds, each growing up with a secret they never dared share with another soul.

Once a privileged little girl, Tandy Bowen watched as her family was destroyed by a disastrous storm that uprooted her life. Now in her late teens, an unexpected encounter with a boy named Tyrone sparks a life changing event.

Young Tyrone Johnson wanted nothing more than to prove he was fearless. But when everything he held close was taken away, life taught Tyrone to be afraid. Now older and more sheltered, Tyrone closes himself off. But when he meets a girl named Tandy his life changes forever.

There has been no word yet on how or if this series is connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Showrunner Joe Pokaski said, “When Olivia and Aubrey read for the roles, these characters leapt off the page.  We’re so excited to see what these talented young actors bring to the Marvel Universe,” but the word “Cinematic” was absent. Perhaps Pokaski just isn’t completely hip to the proper branding.

In the past, it’s been safe to assume the “It’s all connected” default setting is in place, but we know that doesn’t necessarily work for every show anymore. Legion, which debuts on FX next month, is centered around X-Men characters and is therefore not part of the MCU. The same goes for the other X-Men series Marvel Television is developing for Fox.

There has been no official word the Cloak & Dagger or the Runaways series in development at Hulu are set in the MCU. So far, everything at ABC has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and since Freeform is part of the Disney/ABC family of networks, it’s certainly possible that it will be part of the MCU canon.

Even if it is part of the MCU, I wouldn’t expect much more than casual references to the larger universe in which Cloak & Dagger is set. Ultimately, that will probably be for the best with Pokaski and his team being able to focus on telling their stories with their characters and not having to worry too much about what’s going on elsewhere.
