James Gunn isn’t the first director to share a piece of the score from his upcoming film, but he might be the first to do so with a live orchestra.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director was joined by composer Tyler Bates at Abbey Road to let fans hear and see a sample from the score being performed by the same orchestra that has been recording it this week.

The music is beautiful and emotional with a dose of melancholy before a boost of optimism toward the end. Tyler Bates’ score for the original Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the most underrated scores in superhero cinema thanks in part to all of the attention paid to the Awesome Mix Vol. 1 soundtrack. The same thing could happen with another Awesome Mix headed our way in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but if the rest of the score is as good as what the orchestra played in the video above, Bates could get a little more (deserved) credit this time around.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is due in theaters May 5.
