Sigourney Weaver had the internet going crazy with speculation earlier this week when she said she’s been watching Marvel movies, but was unable to say why. I went out on a limb and guessed that she was playing Helen Cobb in Captain Marvel. I was wrong, as was pretty much everyone who assumed that watching Marvel movies meant that she was up for an actual movie.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe, of course, contains more than movies, which we should have factored into our speculation. During a panel hosted by Marvel and Netflix at New York Comic Con earlier today, Weaver was introduced as the unnamed villain in the team-up series The Defenders.

Now we can speculate over which Marvel villain Weaver will play, but at least we know where we will see her. It’s a testament to the strength of Marvel’s Netflix series that a legend like Sigourney Weaver wanted to join the story of Marvel’s street-level heroes.

I am a little disappointed that Weaver is, as far as we currently know, not set to be in a Marvel movie. I’m not bitter over my prediction being so woefully wrong, but there are some really great potential roles in Marvel movies for which Weaver would have been perfect. I wanted to see her on the biggest Marvel stage, but even so, it’s wonderful to have her in the MCU and I’m sure she will be as amazing as she always is in The Defenders next year.

Let me be the first to wish Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) the best of luck. They’re going to need it.
