The all-seeing Eye of Agamotto has finally found Marvel’s DOCTOR STRANGE! Rumors have kept Benedict Cumberbatch (THE IMITATION GAME) in close proximity to the title role in the upcoming Marvel Studios film for months, but Marvel finally made it official less than an hour ago. Benedict Cumberbatch will play Stephen Strange, The Sorcerer Supreme, for director Scott Derrickson and the film will open November 4, 2016.
Marvel Studios President of Production (and DOCTOR STRANGE producer) Kevin Feige had nothing but high praise for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s newest star.
Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity. In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.
Marvel’s official announcement also clarified that the film will indeed focus on the origins of its main character. Jon Spaihts’ screenplay will take us on Strange’s journey through the worlds and dimensions of magic and sorcery after a tragic car accident leaves him without the use of the hands that made him a world-renowned neurosurgeon.
Cumberbatch is an ideal choice for Stephen Strange. Some will call him a safe choice, and perhaps he is, but that safety comes only from how great of a fit Cumberbatch obviously is for the role. He has the charisma and presence needed to completely embody the character while capturing the imagination of a worldwide audience that has never seen a character quite like this in the MCU, or greater superhero genre.
