Collider has learned through its sources that Marvel Studios is planning to move forward with THE INHUMANS. The studio already has a script they like from Joe Robert Cole and will be reaching out to directors in hopes of releasing the film on one of several dates Marvel has booked between 2017 and 2019. Vin Diesel has also teased his involvement on social media.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY was always an important film for Marvel, as it had the potential to launch a brand new, cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though the studio has never lacked confidence, GOTG’s incredible success has now given Marvel license to continue and expand that pursuit. THE INHUMANS is a very logical next step and could even crossover with GUARDIANS one day, as they did in the comic book “War of Kings” story arc.

Vin Diesel, whose voice can currently be heard saying, “I am Groot,” in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, teased The Inhumans as his next Marvel project on his Facebook page just a couple days ago.

If Diesel really is involved with THE INHUMANS, expect him to star as Black Bolt. Don’t worry about the fact that you’ve heard Diesel’s voice in the MCU, as Black Bolt, King of The Inhumans, doesn’t speak much. What Diesel would bring is the presence and intensity required for a character that relies on non-verbal communication because his voice is a weapon of mass destruction.

First appearing in FANTASTIC FOUR #45 (1965), the Inhumans are a race of super-powered beings whose abilities can lay dormant until they are exposed to Terrigen Mist. In less nerdy terms, think of them as Marvel’s cosmic answer to the Earth-based X-Men. The Inhuman Royal Family, of which some combination would probably be the main team featured on film, consists of the aforementioned Black Bolt, Queen Medusa, Karnak, Gorgon, Triton, Crystal, Lockjaw, and Maximus the Mad (Black Bolt’s brother).
