Marvel has released the second international trailer for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, giving us our best look yet at the full scope of the film. Watch the trailer, then hit the jump for more on what was shown.
For the first time, we catch a glimpse of Peter Quill’s backstory, which involves him leaving Earth as a child. As the only (half) human character on the team, Quill (Chris Pratt) will be called upon to emotionally ground the film, at least in the early going. His troubled childhood and the genuine inspiration behind the mix tape that is his only possession from his home planet should help endear him to audiences.
While antagonist Ronan the Accuser remains relatively hidden, this trailer does a much better job than the U.S. trailers have when it comes to defining what’s at stake in this film. It’s not so much about what is said as the tone that is set by the music and line delivery. There’s a real danger hear and the fun is appropriately placed on hold for a minute.
The comedy comes roaring back, though, as we hear more from Rocket (Bradley Cooper) than ever before. His debates with Quill were hilarious highlights of the 2008 Dan Abnett/Andy Lanning GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY comics, which inspired much of this film. It is wonderful to know and now see that those conversations will be taking place in live-action.
Rocket may feel like Quill sucks the joy out of everything, but GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is going to infuse a whole lot of joy into theaters on August 1, 2014.
