Fresh off of a Golden Globe win for his performance in BEHIND THE CANDELABRA, two-time Academy Award winner Michael Douglas was officially announced to play Hank Pym in Marvel Studios’ ANT-MAN. Marvel broke the story on its own website while finally confirming that Paul Rudd, the lead in the film, is actually playing Scott Lang. Pym is the original Ant-Man from the comics who was later succeeded by Lang.
This news plays right into director Edgar Wright’s previous comments about ANT-MAN being a heist film, as Lang’s methods of acquiring the Ant-Man suit in the comics wasn’t strictly speaking legal. Wright tweeted last week that he was watching the “To Steal An Ant-Man” episode of AVENGERS: EARTH’S MIGHTIEST HEROES as homework for his feature film. That episode, which streams on Netflix for those interested, depicts the Hank Pym to Scott Lang transition of the Ant-Man costume and superhero identity.
Wright retroactively commented on the addition of Douglas as Pym by tweeting a link to an interview he did with Superhero Hype years ago in which he outlined the involvement of the first and second Ant-Man.
The idea that we have for the adaptation is to actually involve both… Henry Pym and Scott Lang. So you actually do a prologue where you see Pym as Ant-Man in action in the 60’s, in sort of ‘Tales to Astonish’ mode basically, and then the contemporary, sort of flash-forward, is Scott Lang’s story, and how he comes to acquire the suit, how he crosses paths with Henry Pym, and then, in an interesting sort of Machiavellian way, teams up with him.
Things can obviously change as a script develops, but this is a cool concept that would give ANT-MAN a very different feel from any other film in the genre. Rudd should make for an excellent Scott Lang and Douglas can certainly be counted on to bring Hank Pym to life. Any way you slice it, this is another feather in Marvel’s casting cap as the studio continues to add all-time greats to its upcoming lineup, which also includes Robert Redford in this year’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER.
ANT-MAN crawls into theaters on July 31, 2015.
