Per Deadline, Benecio Del Toro will play a “lead role” in Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The role is not identified in the article, but described as one that will be a part of future Marvel films. Del Toro is an incredibly talented actor and an obviously welcome addition to a cast that already includes Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, and Glenn Close as the leader of the Nova Corps.

As far as what role Del Toro might be playing, Adam Warlock is a character that immediately comes to mind. Warlock was very much a lead character in the Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning “Guardians of the Galaxy” monthly that ran from 2008 to 2010. Del Toro has the range to make Warlock’s sorcery compelling and, more importantly, believable.

Warlock was also a pivotal character in the 1991 Marvel series, “The Infinity Gauntlet.” Warlock was tasked with rounding up all of Earth’s greatest heroes and leading them into battle against Thanos (another character Del Toro could be playing). Seeing as how Thanos has already debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s not a stretch to think Adam Warlock won’t be far behind.
