Could it be true?  Will we finally see Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley in a superhero film?  According to Variety, we just might, as the outlet reports that Kingsley is in “final talks” to join the cast of director Shane Black’s Iron Man 3.  The excitement over this potential casting coups is matched by the intrigue generated by conflicting reports of what role he will fill.

There’s no doubt he’s a villain, but where Variety reports Kingsley will not play Mandarin, that’s exactly the character The Hollywood Reporter says Kingsley might be.  In the latter case, Kingsley will not be the primary villain.  Both outlets believe the script for Iron Man 3 has been adapted from the popular “Extremis” storyline that Warren Ellis wrote in 2005.

In any event, this is great news for the film that will kickoff the post-Avengers era for Marvel Studios.
