Marvel’s Black Panther, which already features an incredible cast, just added another major name. Oscar winner and legend Forest Whitaker has joined the cast as Zuri, described as an elder statesman in Wakanda.
In the comics, Zuri was a friend of T’Chaka who becomes a friend, advisor, and warrior for T’Challa (a.k.a. Black Panther) after T’Chaka’s death. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we saw T’Chaka (John Kani) die at the United Nations bombing in Captain America: Civil War, so we will probably see T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), the new King of Wakanda, leaning heavily on Zuri for guidance in Black Panther.
Black Panther is being directed by Ryan Coogler based on a script Coogler co-wrote with Joe Robert Cole. Whitaker joins an amazing group of actors that already includes Chadwick Boseman in the title role along with Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Michael B. Jordan, and Winston Duke.
Production on Black Panther is scheduled to begin in January for a February 16, 2018 release.
